8 weeks to a better me: Week 3/Healthy Eating

This week I am so happy to have my VERY favorite food blogger here...I feel honored to have Tracy posting on Sometimes Sweet today, and I am beyond excited about what she's sharing.  When I thought about who I wanted to talk about healthy food, Tracy was the first person that came to mind- and with good reason. Shutterbean is chock full of amazing, healthy ideas, and whenever I leave Tracy's site I am inspired to expand our menu with new, delicious meals and desserts. I also love that she isn't afraid to indulge, and she shares a lot of treats and sweets, but made with yummy whole food ingredients. Definitely stop by Shutterbean and say hello! I guarantee you will love it as much as I do- it's truly an AMAZING blog and resource, chock full of beautiful photos and recipes. Thank you again Tracy for being a part of this feature.

Hi I'm Tracy!!  My blog, Shutterbean is where I share my love for food, photography & prettie things. I'm a working mom who absolutely LOVES to cook & bake. I make sure to fit time in my schedule to do so because it feeds me keeps me sane & feeds me creatively!

Before I begin, I want to thank Danielle for having me! Thanks Danielle!  I'm really excited to talk to you about Healthy Eating habits and give you a few tips on making good healthy food choices. A few months ago I was looking at my posts and realized that I totally have formula on my blog. Bake something totally naughty THEN post a few healthier cooking recipes afterward!  Honestly, this is how I live my life and this is how I am able to keep my weight in check. You too can have baked goods and yummy treats if you respect MODERATION! It's all about balancing it out!

So here are three ESSENTIAL tips I have for you:

1. Drink WATER!!

Getting sick of this mantra? Don't!! I read once that our brains easily confuse the feeling of thirst with hunger. So before you dive for a handful of chips, drink some water!  You could be consuming unnecessary calories for no reason! A good tip for drinking water is to fill up a pretty pitcher of water in the morning and make a goal to have it finished by a certain time of day. I can hear you saying, "But water is sooooo boring!" It doesn't have to be! I like to add a few slices of cucumbers, oranges & lemons to perk up my water. You could also make some iced tea and dilute it throughout the day. These little things makes a difference!

2. Keep healthy snacks with you for on the go!

Every couple of weeks I take stock of what's in my pantry. I pour the leftover dried fruits & nuts into a bowl and make my own trail-mix. I put the trail-mix in baggies and keep a few of them in my purse at ALL TIMES. When I'm driving home from work, I reach into my bag and eat some. The best part is that it helps prevent me from bingeing on something not so healthy for me when I get home and it ties me over til dinner time! Save your baggies & recycle them for your next batch!

I also make my own Fully Loaded Granola bars too!  They are especially tasty & totally kid friendly!

And my last trick.....

3. Eat at least ONE salad EVERY DAY.

This just makes sense! I like to have a large salad at dinner because I wake up the next morning feeling light and fresh! If I have a salad at lunch, it's usually because I know I'm going to be having something goooooood for dinner!  And when I say goooooood, I really mean something naughty!

Here's a bonus tip: Remember! YOU ARE WHAT YOU EAT!!!

Wouldn't you rather be a nice handful of healthy, vibrant tomatoes than a preservative laden bag of nutritionally void potato chips??

Think about it....

Oh oh!! Wait I have one more thing to add!

Make sure you eat the rainbow! Vary your diet with different colors. Not only is it healthy, it helps keep things interesting!

So that's it! I hope this leaves you feeling somewhat inspired. Eating healthy is EASY! You just have to make time to do it.

If you want to add a few really great/healthy cookbooks to your library, these are a few of my favorites:

Appetite for Reduction (everything is vegan AND low cal/low fat & SUPER tasty)

Everyday Food Magazine (I could go on forever about why I love this. Get an issue and it will change your life!)

Power Foods, from the Editors of Whole Living (A very comprehensive look at Super Foods with great/healthy recipes!)

Super Natural Every Day Cookbook (Lovely, inspiring, beautiful food that makes you feel good!)

Mad Hungry: Feeding Men and Boys (This is not JUST for feeding men & boys! It's all about homemade, comfort food & feeding your children!)

And be sure to stop by my website!  You'll find at least two new recipes every week!

 1) Try out two new kinds of vegetables. I typically get pretty stuck in a veggie rut, and Hank and I often eat the same types- broccoli, bell peppers, onions and tons of garlic. Recently we branched out a bit and integrated kale into our weekly menu and loved it. I'm going food shopping tomorrow and my goal is to pick up two new to us veggies and work them into our meals this week.
2) To go off #3, eat a salad everyday!

3) Drink 3 Camelbak bottles full of a water a day.

So, those are my 3 goals for the week, what are yours? Be sure to link in the comments! I can't wait to check yours out, too!

8 weeks to a better me: Week Two

http://sometimessweet.blogspot.com/2011/05/8-weeks-to-better-me-week-one.html

Thank you all so much for all of the encouragement on week one of this project! It's awesome to know that so many of you are participating in this challenge, and I think it's going to be a lot of fun.  I wanted you to know that at the request of a few readers, I made a button over on the left hand side bar. I linked it to the very first post so if you'd like to add it to your blog for these next 8 weeks please do!

This week I am so, so excited about my guest blogger. Amber is by far one of the most positive girls I know via blogging and it's hard to not smile when you read her blog or look at her photos. To me, Amber exemplifies what it means to really love life- through her blog you'll see that she is a happy, confident, wonderful woman who really loves her life and the people in it. She exudes positivity, and every time I visit her blog I find myself smiling. And additionally, Amber is an amazing role model for fitness and health. Working out is a part of her daily life, and through her posts, Instagram photos and tweets I am always motivated to get out there. I was so happy when she agreed to be a part of this project, and I know she will really inspire all of you too. I definitely encourage you to add her blog to your daily reads- she's such a fabulous person and her blog is one of my very favorites. Thank you Amber for being a part of "8 weeks to a better me"!

hi hi! I'm Amber and I blog over at I Love You to the Moon.  I'm 23 and married to my very best friend. We live in a smallish Texas town with our two pups: Emma, the Great Dane, and Tank, the Boxer.  Adam is a police officer and I am a dispatcher, going to school to be an elementary teacher. I love enjoying rainy weather on the back porch, early morning coffee, sweet music, a strong cigar, belly laughing, drive in movies, and good conversation. Jesus is my favorite. :]

When Danielle asked me to be a part of this super inspiring feature, I was thrilled. I read through the email and saw that she chose fitness/working out as my topic to write on! Perfect. I love staying healthy and working out is a huge part of my life. I've been active in some way or another for just about all my life. I started cross country and weight training in junior high and fell in love.  Since then I’ve been pretty passionate about staying fit and taking care of my body.

These things are my biggest encouragements on a daily basis. I hope they are helpful for you too!

1) Find out what your limit is, and push yourself further.

* Believe that you can accomplish what you want. This mindset keeps me motivated constantly. Now, if you have medical issues, please don't push yourself too hard. Otherwise, if you feel like you are GOING.TO.DIE. You won't! Just keep on! Your body is a crazy beautiful constantly adapting machine. It can handle 10 more minutes on the treadmill, 10 pounds added to your bench press, or 10 extra reps.

*I keep a mental note, and some written ones as well, of the activity that I do each day. All of my running stats are kept in my phone and I strive to beat my record every run.

*If my endurance is waning I just think to myself, “If I keep moving my legs, I will keep moving. It’s just the way it works.”  It’s really crazy how much the human body can take. Marvel at what your body does every workout. The more you work out and push yourself, the more you will notice just how strong you are.

*If you have a friend or significant other, try working out together! I never thought I would enjoy working out with anyone else. I loved the solitude and getting in my own little zone. I also thought the sweat and funny faces should just be kept to myself. However, I adore working out with my husband. He pushes me when I don’t feel like pushing myself. He knows that I can lift more than I do sometimes and puts a few extra plates on for me. He spots me when I want to go heavy and encourages me the whole workout. Seeing him workout hard makes me want to work out just as hard. On days that the gym doesn’t sound fun to me, but does to him, we both go and he is there to get me in gear. It’s been such a good thing.

2) Be nice to yourself.

* When you just don't feel like working out, take a rest day. Your body needs rest. I have learned this the difficult way and completely overworked myself. As much as I would love to work out 7 days a week, my body loves working out just around 5 best. It needs those two days to recover. When I don't rest, I usually injure myself and am then forced to take days off anyways!

* Drink plenty of water. I bring a cute Nalgene bottle filled with cold water and drink it all during my workout. This makes my workouts last longer and feel better.

*Give your body fuel before or after your workout. I am not a big breakfast eater at all, so I have a protein shake before every workout. Then I make a hearty lunch afterwards with plenty of carbs and protein to refuel.  Eating healthy also totally motivates me to get to the gym.  Good food and hard exercise is such a good combo!

* Encourage yourself. Most of the times, I am my biggest critic. Tell yourself things you'd like to hear from your family and friends, and BELIEVE it. Positivity is more powerful than I give it credit for sometimes. When I go to the gym with a positive mindset, I have much better workouts.  Focus on the things you like about your body instead of the things you don’t. Notice new muscles that are forming and toning! You earned them!

* Look cute to get sweaty. I know this sounds ridiculous, but hear me out! I actually want to put on my workout gear in the mornings when I look and see that I have a mint green polka dotted sports bra, loose fitting racer back tank, black compression pants, and awesome sneaks set out. I even use a dab of concealer and brush of blush to feel fresh before I head out.  Of course I’ve gone to the gym in a ratty t-shirt, ill fitting shorts, and worn out shoes and still gotten the job done; it’s just not quite as enjoyable to me.

* Make sure to stretch out before and after workouts. It helps more than I realize and makes my muscles happy.  I even have a day of the week, mostly on my rest days, that I devote to stretching. (P90X stretch is amazing.)

3) Mix it up.

* Nothing will burn you out faster than the same routine every day. I love running more than anything, but I can't run every single day or I start dreading it. Same goes for the gym. Branch out and try something new. If you have never ventured into the weight room before, give it a try! It's my favorite place in the gym, actually. It can seem intimidating at first, but once you get a few basics down it won't seem so bad. If you need to, google a few free weight exercises before you head to the gym, just so you will know where to start. You can even take a little journal with exercises jotted down to keep you on track and focused. Some girls have this preconceived idea that weights will make you look like a man, and that they aren't for girls. FALSE. I've lifted weights since 7th grade and I'm pretty sure I don't have a manly figure. Now, if you take steroids, testosterone pills, and bench press 400 pounds that might make you look like a man. ;] Picking up a set of 10 pound dumbbells for a few sets will sculpt the muscles you do have and burn lots of calories in a different way than cardio.

* Some days I don't feel like going to the gym. The weather may be yucky, or just being around other people doesn't sound appealing. I pop in one of my favorite workout videos and get after it at home. If you are looking for a cheap video that really will get your heart rate up and work your muscles, I would suggest any of the Jillian Michaels workout videos. They are less than $10 a piece. I even heard they are on Netflix Instant queue!  My favorite workout videos, although a little more pricey for the whole set, is P90X. Tony Horton is amazing and his workouts are challenging. Most the time I can cruise through workout videos, but with his I find myself having to catch my breath and take water breaks. Good stuff! So even though you skip out on the gym, you still get physical activity in and will probably be even more motivated to the hit the gym the next day.

* Find new ways to get your heart rate up. Pick up a hula hoop while your favorite show is on, go for a bike ride and enjoy the weather, go walking with a friend during some free time, swim a few laps, or if you’re lucky enough to have nature trails, go on a hike!

1) Switch out two of my gym days for outdoor exercise. (I need more fresh air!)

2) Get my bike tire fixed this week and order Henry's bike trailer. Although this isn't a direct fitness goal, once I do both of these things I'll be able to enjoy our beautiful spring weather via daily bike rides (and Henry, too!).

3) Integrate yoga into my routine this week. Either take the Tuesday night class or use a video at home.

So, those are my goals for the week! What are yours? Be sure to link back in the comments so we can all check them out. And as always, feel free to grab the feature image and/or the "3 goals" image. Also, I still haven't quite finished going through and visiting everyone's blog who posted last Sunday, but it's a blog priority for this week (along with visiting the links below), and I look forward to stopping by your corner of the internet! I can't wait to see what you guys choose for your fitness goals too.

I hope you all were successful in last week's blog-related goals (I was for the most part, minus one!) and I also hope that you have the best Sunday/Mother's Day! Don't forget to pop over to Amber's space and say hello! :)

8 weeks to a better me: Week One

 8weeks

Hello and happy May! I am so, so excited to kick off a brand new project here on Sometimes Sweet today, called "8 weeks to a better me." The idea of this project started off when I realized how much I loved making smaller, more attainable goals every Sunday night that I would work on for the next seven days. I loved having a fresh start and going into my week with a sense of purpose, and ending it with a sense of accomplishment. I made a post on this a month or so ago, and found that you guys loved it too! I think many of us found that it was easier to set goals that were immediately relevant to day-to-day life, and when I started seeing results from this simple goal setting I was hooked. Since I first made that post, I've continued to make small goals every Sunday night that I keep in my mind throughout the week. I usually will write them down in the notebook I always keep with me, or on a small chalkboard in our kitchen. They can be as simple as "eat more green veggies," "workout five times," or even "blog more about my daily life." Anything. And when I starting grouping my goals into categories, I realized that choosing a category and focusing on it was really beneficial for me, kind of like a "theme for the week."  And even though I was only working on each goal for a week at a time, I found that after that week was up, my good habits carried over.

I thought and thought about how I could translate this idea into a longer-running blog feature, while at the same time keeping it interesting and fresh. I sat down and brainstormed one afternoon about different categories I'd like to include in this project, and "8 weeks to a better me" was born. I contacted 8 inspiring bloggers that really represent each of the 8 topics I chose to include in this project, and now, for the next 8 weeks, we will be hearing from each of them.

So here's how this is going to work, and I encourage you to join in over these next two months:

Each Sunday evening during the months of May and June one of my eight participants will present us with a guest post on their topic. They'll be discussing how and why their topic is relevant to them, and will also be giving us inspiration and motivation to move towards setting goals relevant to the subject matter. For instance, this week's topic is "Blogging Inspiration," so our participants (this week we have a husband and wife duo!) will be sharing what inspires them to blog.

At the end of this and every post, I will be setting three goals for the week that have to do with the subject at hand. So this week I'll be setting three simple goals in relation to blogging.

If you're inspired and interested, I encourage you to join along for this week, or all eight weeks!

Essentially at the end of the 8 weeks, we will have all done a little more, tried some new things, set and achieved goals, and truly become a little better than we were. I'm definitely excited, and I think you guys are really going to enjoy the amazing bloggers I have lined up!

Feel free to use the image above (photo courtesy of my sweet and talented friend Kelly Ann- be sure to check out her blog), and come along on this self-improvement journey over the next 8 weeks!

Our very first contributors for this project are Don and Rachel, who have quickly become not only two of my most favorite blogs, but two of my favorite people and friends. Don is a rarity in this big blogging world, because he is a "daddy-blogger," and a dedicated one at that. His daily posts about his wife Rachel and daughter Adeline melt my heart every single day, and the weekly vlogs he and his family share are absolutely worth watching. Rachel is in most of these videos and I have such adoration for this lovely lady. You can just tell what a beautiful person she is, in and out, and not a day goes by where I don't read something of hers and wish we lived in the same place so we could be mama best friends and spend our days hanging out with our babies!

So, with that said, here's the first week of "8 weeks to a better me"! Be sure to stop by both Don and Rachel's blog and say hello, too. I promise you will fall in love with both of their spaces and maybe even find a new favorite blog (or two!), and while you're at it, be sure to enter Don's handmade giveaway as well! So awesome. Thanks again both of you for being a part of this project! So, here's their "one week to a better us," the first part of 8! Enjoy.

dani

Rachel & Don- that's Us! We are a married duo and we both blog! Yup. We have a wee little one, a precious little honey-honey named Adeline. We live in Upstate, NY in the beautiful Victorian city of Troy surrounded by art, music, adventure and Love. We are so thrilled and humbled that Dani asked us to participate in this feature. We so look forward to seeing what the other participants have to say and share! Thanks Dani!! xo

One week to a Better Collective "Us":

Why do we all blog? Someone who doesn't blog may guess a collective narcissism. But they'd be very wrong, wouldn't they? The truth is I'm interested in the everyday...Your everyday. The everyday of Kate, Becky, Jen, Dani, Joe, Don, Jane Doe, etc... these are people you can relate to or who show you things you've never seen or INSPIRE you. This is the same reason I devoured zines as a younger kid. I loved to read the experience of someone else who is not a celebrity, who's reputation may not precede them, who is finding inspiration in their everyday. Blogging is a way to connect with others in this big world. To offer an "ear" and a "shoulder" and in turn confide our own adventures, fears, hopes and loves. We look for a response and a connection. It's the pen pal letter of the 21st century. And I'm a big fan.

How do you list your inspiration, or, worse yet, narrow it down to 3 items?! We all glean inspiration from infinite passing moments, events, people and tangible items in our lives. Well the two of us thought about this and decided that, for us, there are 3 standout ways we make our lives feel rich and full and these things inspire the feel of our blogs and what we share with others. We'd like to tell you a little more about them:

AD: Adeline's Daddy
LH Local Honey

"The Small Things"

AD: I never had a time in my life that I kept a journal, my blog has become what I would imagine a journal is like. When you are writing a post daily, you realize that there isn't a life changing earth shaking event each and every day. But, when I make it a point to have a post up most days, I actually end up not searching for things to write about, but enjoying what life is and taking time to notice THE SMALL THINGS. If I didn't have my blog there may be a possibility that these things would go by quickly without a second thought, but taking things as inspiration, I write them down. Reflecting on that sliver in time can make you realize how important the small things can be. And of course, this is amplified when you bring in the fact that Rachel and I have had our first child, Adeline, for six months now. She is a part of my every day, and every second. Once I found out that I was going to be a Dad, I made it my goal to not miss a thing in her life, not even the small things... I write them down, and someday she will be able to read about the first time she held a flower (see video).

LH: The small things. Not the post that makes everyone jealous or makes you look cool. It's the moment you stopped thinking ahead and just enjoyed what was at hand. The moment you allowed to just happen. The birds you watched pass overhead, the song you closed your eyes to, the people you see walking by saying "I love you" to each other. Walking the city and just letting the day happen.

"Support Local"

AD: It has been a big thing for us to be mindful of where our money goes. So, on our blogs we like to talk about businesses in our city. One local organization here called Local First has a slogan "Buy local when you can, support your neighbor, not the man"... whoa, Being part of an underground community since I was younger (a music scene, not a cult or a creepy thing), there's nothing better than sticking it to "the man"... man. I don't think people think about these things, but there is a reason that everyone is raging about jobs, "the man" has found someone to do it cheaper than you would, and in the process has put Carl's General Store out of business.

LH: Wouldn't it be cool if that awesome clothing boutique was down the street instead of in the next town in the strip mall?!? Supporting your local small businesses helps to build a stronger local economy leading to MORE local businesses, shops and FUN. We know all of our local shop owners by name and they have all: stayed open late for us, opened especially for us on a holiday, given us a discount, hand delivered merchandise to our house that we mistakenly left at the shop. When is the last time Walmart did any of that for you?!? We LOVE reading about your local businesses. It gives a feel for what your corner of the world is like.

"Love Your Community"

LH: Get involved! This doesn't have to be boring. I love fashion and I love art and creativity. So...Four years ago I started an Indie Craft Market in my city. Our summer season starts again in the beginning of June and I can't wait to see all of the friends I've made. Our little family visits our Farmers Market every weekend and we see all of our neighbors and farmers and enjoy delicious fresh foods. Visit your community art center, galleries, bike rescues, music venues, workshops, farms, parks etc. Just make a small effort and the rewards are huge and inspiring!

AD: I absolutely love our little city. It may be a Victorian city, turned industrial mecca, turned wasteland, only in the last 10 years again becoming a beauty. We've only lived here for around 5 years, and this place inspires me.

In the spirit of sharing, this video is a small look at a day in our little life. We can't wait to take a peek into your life as well. :)

Rachel  &  Don

So now, here are my three blogging goals for the week:

1) Blog about one local restaurant that I love.
2) Take my camera out more than I already do to capture more day to day moments.
3) Finish the guest posts that are on my plate.

How about you? Like I said above, I'd love it if you'd participate in this project over the next 8 weeks. Feel free to grab the feature image at the top of this post and the "blogging" and/or "3 goals" images for your own blog, and share your goals every week too- and be sure to link your posts in the comments so we can all check them out. I'm really looking forward to reading all of your goals! New posts will go up at 4pm Arizona time each Sunday for the next 2 months. Thanks again for reading- I so appreciate each and every one of you!

p.s. how ADORABLE was Don and Rachel's video?! Love them.
