Geneva Motor Show 2009 Swiss Misses

Every year we board our flights to the Geneva Motor Show after telling our significant others (wives, fiances, imaginary girlfriends) that we’re going for the cars. We might even believe it when we say it, too, but then we get here and batting eyes, pouting lips and mile-long legs keep getting in the way of our cameras. We’d ask them to step out of the frame, but, well… that would just be rude and we were raised better than that. (Some of us were, anyway.) So it may not help us on the home front, but here is who we met at this year’s show.

Nissan GT-R

The Nissan GT-R V Spec will allegedly be packing 520 horses when it arrives some time next year. That still won’t be enough for a lot of people (especially folks who want to win seriously competitive drag races), so Hennessey is offering GT-R upgrades that beef Godzilla up to 600 hp.

New Eagle E-type Speedster Crazy cars

New Eagle E-type Speedster Car Review

New Eagle E-type Speedster Car gorgeous bonnet is a fully built 4.7-liter straight-six that makes 300 horsepower and 340 lb-ft of torque. Not impressive by 2009 standards until you consider a few facts. First, all that torque shows up at 1,750 rpm. Second, the E-type Speedster weighs just a dumbbell over 2,400 pounds (2,420 to be exact). That’s ten pounds more than a brand new Mazda MX-5 Miata, but the Eagle has fully twice the power. As such, zero sixty happens in less than five seconds and the top speed is 175 mph.

New Alfa MiTo Car Review

New Alfa MiTo Car have historically struggled in the land of the free, home of the brave. Typically regarded as an afterthought by Detroit, our current domestic crop (Focus, Aveo, Caliber) needs more fertilizer. Imported “penalty boxes” fair somewhat better, but for every Honda Fit there’s a Daihatsu Charade. Long story short, profit margins are slim and Americans are big people with big families that drive big distances. However, BMW’s new Mini made serious and surprising inroads by giving small car buyers lots of content and high style (and a high price tag). BMW’s sold 1.5 million of them, and given the Mini’s success, it seems like a no brainer that Alfa Romeo (maybe via Chrysler) would bring the sexy little MiTo to our shores. Italian styling, sporty handling and high MPGs seem like a winning combo. Sadly, no — maybe.
