ScoopFree ~ Self Cleaning Litter Box

Kitty litter and litter boxes are gross! They stink and are unpleasant to clean no matter how you slice it. It is one of those jobs which no one wants to do and often becomes neglected. But, in the case of litter boxes neglect is not a good thing, the yuck factor just climbs higher the longer it is left unattended.

So, if you are anything like me, and you haven't been able to train your cat to use the toilet than the next best thing is a self cleaning litter box!

How lucky I was to receive a ScoopFree Self-Cleaning Litter Box! This is one smart litter box, which does all of that nasty work for you.

ScoopFree is the self-cleaning litter box you can leave alone for weeks at a time.
It is the only self-cleaning litter box which uses disposable litter trays to provide hands off convenience and unbeatable odour control.

I must admit, I was a little skeptical. Our cat was old and I thought would be pretty resistant to change. But, using some transition tips {like putting the new ScoopFree litter box right by her old litter box and not cleaning the old one anymore} she took fairly easily to the ScoopFree Self Cleaning Litter Box.

Our litter box location is in our basement. The floor down there is flat concrete, the only problem was having to move the new box a little closer to an outlet, as it must be plugged in for it to operate.

The way I see it, there are two components to the ScoopFree Self Cleaning Litter Box which makes it awesome and truly hands free.

Disposable Litter Tray

Simply, place a disposable tray on the floor of your litter box. The trays are pre-filled with Blue Crystals and they have a plastic liner which prevents leakage. For one cat it is recommended that you change the tray ever 20 - 30 days. Those Blue Crystals absorb urine and they do a good job at keeping the litter odour under control.

We found for our test cat that about 22 days was the maximum we could go before really needing to change the tray. The more cats you have using the litter box the sooner you will need to change the tray, as with any litter system.

I must add here that when reviewing a product I always look online for other user reviews. You know I don't post negative reviews here, so if I don't think the product is a good value or doesn't do what it claims, or is just unusable you won't see it reviewed on my blog. A lot of reviews I found spoke of the cost of replacement trays. While the cost does initially seem high, I think it is important to note that the Blue Crystal is premium, and is the secret to why ScoopFree does such a good job at keeping odours down. There is no messy handling of litter with the pre-filled trays and one tray does last for almost a full month. Plus, ScoopFree has set up a subscription plan where you can purchase your trays, on a pre-arranged schedule and free delivery! If you take advantage of all the incentives you can get your re-fills for as little as $11.65 each...which to me is quite reasonable, and quite in line with costs of ordinary litter.

Automatic Rake

The automatic rake will run across the tray twenty minutes after your cat exits the box. The rake will drag along any waste left behind and deposit it into the covered end compartment. Should your cat come back into the box the rake won't move - something I was little worried about...I didn't want my cat to become hurt from her litter box. That covered end compartment keeps all odours nicely inside. The automatic rake makes sure that your litter is clean and fresh all of the time. And, in the month we have been using it, it hasn't stopped working or jammed into place.

Costs ~ Purchasing from ScoopFree the original litter box is priced at $139.95.

But, there is a limited time DEAL available at Costco (Canada) right now, which is what I received. Purchase for the price of $124.99, which includes the ScoopFree Original, with one disposable tray + FroliCat Bolt. The Bolt is a value of $19.95 and your cat will love it! This is an awesome deal!

After having the opportunity to use it for a full month, we can report that we are quite pleased with the results. It is fantastic for me, with my back injury, it eliminates all bending and scooping, which is really difficult for me. The cat seemed to adjust easily to using the ScoopFree system, and I don't see the price of replacement trays to be an issue, when using the subscription option. To sweeten the deal, be sure to check out the Costco pricing and package bundle!

Disclaimer:
The ScoopFree Self Cleaning Litter Box was used for a full month before writing this review. These are my personal thoughts of the litter box. A bundle package was delivered to me for the purpose of this review.
